5 Ways A Smart Writer Like Me Hurt Myself

A few minutes ago, I was playing around on the computer, and noticed that my wrist hurt.

A couple of checks revealed it to be my tendinitis flaring up again, in my elbow. Aaaawesome.

So how did I pull this off? I’ll explain it.

(Don’t take this as medical advice. I’m not qualified to give medical advice.)

Harmful Act #1 – Repetitive Motions

Clicking, in this case. I was playing Minetest (a game that’s a bit like Minecraft) for hours at a time for several days. Dumb me.

When you write (or play games) make sure that you take breaks and do other stuff with your hands in those break times.

Harmful Act #2 – No Ergonomics

It seems like ergonomics is this silly thing, but it’s not. My keyboard is on my lap, and my mouse is next to me on the couch.

Don’t do this. Make sure everything’s at the proper angles and distances for you.

Harmful Act #3 – Didn’t Pay Attention to Physical Signs

There’s a certain tiredness that happens before the pain. I ignored it. Don’t ignore your body.

Harmful Act #4 – Not Putting on the Brace Right Away

If you have braces or ACE bandages and know how to use them, use them when they are needed. Don’t be me.

Harmful Act #5 – Ignoring the Pain

Pain is a signal from your body that something’s not right. In repetitive stress injuries, pushing through the pain can cause more damage.
